Customers often exclaim "Wow!" when entering one of The Nature
Company stores; a world as full of surprises and delights as nature
itself. Every product, from the high-end computerize d telescopes to
squeeze-and-squirt frogs, magically introduces customers to an
aspect of the natural world. The Nature Company exists to provide an
assortment of high-quality, value-oriented products that encourage
exploration, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. In
our stores, our catalog, and on our website we balance authenticity
and knowledge with a splash of humor and an unbridled sense of
wonder.
Founded by two former Peace Corps members, The Nature Company
has always supported the efforts of non-profit organizations dedicated
to preserving the environment, protecting indigenous cultures and
improving education in the sciences. In addition, The Nature
Company cultivates sound environmental practices among its staff
and employs a full-time naturalist.

Smith & Hawken
|
It has been observed (by Will and Ariel Durant) that
gardening is the most ephemeral of all the arts.
Indeed, a garden is a composition in constant flux,
subject to whims of weather, soil, and serendipity.
By contrast, Smith & Hawken got its start selling
gardening implements that are anything but ephemeral.
About two decades ago, John Jeavons - a devoted
organic gardener and member of Ecology Action, a
non-profit environmental group near Stanford
University - was in need of the stalwart British hand
tools required for double digging (essential to
bio-intensive gardening). His friends Dave Smith and
Paul Hawken began importing the tools for other
gardeners as well, and Smith & Hawken was thus
born. (Today, those forks and spades are probably
just breaking in.)
Over the years we've remained committed to seeking
out the world's most respected crafters of hand
tools - in addition to sourcing the highest-quality
plants, bulbs, organic gardening solutions, workwear,
furniture, containers, books, botanicals, and
housewares. These goods are a natural extension of
our commitment to sustainable agriculture and the
environment: a product that lasts a lifetime saves
natural resources.
